The houses are surrounded by a garden and
unfold around centrally placed,
south-facing atriums. The main living
area, the dining area, a w.c. and the
kitchen are situated on the ground floor; the
bedrooms and their respective bathrooms are on
the first floor; the auxiliary spaces and
parking areas - all autonomous for each house
- have been located in the basement.
Bearing in mind that the living room, the

dining room and the kitchen are considered
the focal point of every family, these
three areas have access to the atrium ensuring
the privacy of the inhabitants from the other
houses and the street.
The orientation of the
building plays an integral part in the
design process.  The building is
south-facing which results in an almost
entirely glazed south facade; on the north,

only the necessary openings have been
provided; these are used for a north to south
ventilation axis.  From an integrated
environmental design point of view, the
atrium operates passively by creating a
microclimate, which provides protection
against the north winds during the winter.
In
order to minimise thermal losses, we have
used insulation materials of high

specifications, and window profiles with
thermal breaks, as well as low emissivity
double glazing, insulated with argon gas
fill-in. In addition, nanotechnology
has been used to secure the waterproofing of
the joints and any capillary gaps. To
prevent overheating through the southern
glazed façade, shading is achieved on the
ground floor by a first floor slab
projecting parametrically to the atrium;

across the first floor overheating is
controlled by electrically operated
exterior louvers.
